History Articles: John Bell, a Brief Biography

Posted by: Dr. James Jones on Jul 01, 2003 - 06:00 AM

1787, John Bell was born, on Mill Creek, near Nashville. He served as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate and was an opponent of President Jackson as well as secession. In fact he ran on the Grand National Union Party ticket in 1860 as a compromise candidate between Lincoln and the fire eating secessionist in the South. He was unsuccessful but urged Lincoln to follow a policy of conciliation. During the war he lived with his family, moving from Alabama and Georgia. He returned to Tennessee after the war and died in relative obscurity.
