History Articles: Student's Protest Integration at Maryville College

     February 8, 1882, Maryville. Animosity, acrimony and antagonism prevailed at Maryville College between the faculty and the members of the student Animi Cultus Society. Student associates refused the African-American membership, objecting to allegedly being forced to accept black students as members. The Animi Cultus members claimed States rights and protection under the Constitution, while the faculty maintained that the 15th Amendment and a centralized power are the essentials in the argument. Many of the Animi Cultus members withdrew from classes in protest.
